Dinner Date

I have never officially hosted one outside the library but I love the NPR listening party kits that are provided on their podcast page site. If you and your friends are into podcasts, I highly suggest starting a club or hosting dinner parties semi-regularly to spark intellectual and engaging conversation between friends and coworkers. And what better way to start with this month. Since the month of March celebrates Women and March 8 is the official date for International Day of the Girl, NPR has kits to cover a history lesson, interviews with women like Gloria Steinem and Nina Jacobson, women in politics and pop culture, women and the workplace along with other audio content on wise words from women. Interested, then get your kit today and host your very own party this month!!!

Free Time

For the first time in seven years, I will not have to think about school work and it feels all too wonderful. For the last several years I have been in one state of mind, worry; and even if in the end I got the high grade on an assignment, the anticipation and waiting for the professor's feedback has always made me nervous (I'm no Einstein but hard work and dedication has gotten me to this point and I'm extremely proud of myself for making it this far)! So here it is, the end of the road and I seriously cannot believe that my collegiate years are almost over. I thought it would be a huge relief and for the most it is, but now that I have a pretty good nine to five job and all this free time ahead of me, what do I do now? Honestly, I'm worried about wasted time, my biggest fear is not fulfilling all the things I want to do in my life. I made a promise to myself in high school that I will live with no regrets, I intend on keeping that promise.

All I have known in my life is academics and while I have entertained the idea for going for another degree, the possibilities and opportunities that lie in the unknown of my future is kind of exciting. I really don't see myself just being this one thing, I love my job but being a librarian is not the only thing that defines me. I'm interested in so many things, it's a matter of figuring out what means the most to me and going for it and not being afraid. What do you do in your free time? What are the important things in your life? Don't live in regret, go after what you love and pursue it, there's no greater feeling than passion. We need more passionate people in the world. Don't settle people, you owe yourself to be great

Girl Talk

Over the Easter Holiday, I had a nice but long chat with my mom (and sister) about lifestyle bloggers, their very glossy websites and their Instagram feed. My mom was more than irritated and definitely needed to blow off steam. So I let her tell me exactly how she felt about some of the blogs I have introduced to her over the years. She even felt the need to tell me that my blog needed more love but thankfully excused my lagging and reminded me of what my priorities should be--work and school first, blog second!
But here is the deal, my blog is important to me, I may start researching and writing posts the week before (or even at eleven the night before) but I love being here and establishing  connections and relationships with fellow bloggers and my audience. I consider myself a blogaholic, work breaks are for donning over outfit posts, monthly beauty hauls and home renovations, I can’t help but think about rearranging my living room. While the blog is a part of me, the job and school come first, they have too. I often feel I don’t have the time, energy or funds to curate this space into the polished and perfect website you see with other blogs. Then again, I am more about the content and listening to what my followers want to read. I love promoting my favorite lipsticks (from Maybelline to Tom Ford), the perfect white tank top and marketing brands that I actually wear and like. Above all else I especially love indulging in girl talk, I try to portray the real and flawed person that I am. When my mom felt the need to explode and go off on women I really like, she told me she was tired of the inauthentic posts, the fact that these bloggers think they can relate with their audience and the assumed entitlement. Honestly, I am too! I often have feelings of inadequacy for not having an apartment in a big city with high end furniture, traveling every other month, housing the most impressive library you have ever seen or sporting around in head to toe Lululemon sportswear and maintaining a wardrobe that includes two or three pairs of Valentino shoes and Chanel purses galore. I am not tiny, I can barely cook and my home space is far from picture perfect.
Aspirations and expectations have become exhausting, why in the world do I hold myself to other people’s expectations and not my own? When and why did I set my rule book aside and turn to others? The bloggers, who have remained true from the beginning, continue to inspire and motivate me but at the end of the day I am who I am, and they are who they are. Their blogs are surely pretty (and successful) but that’s all you get, what about the flaws, the truth, the hard work, the reality behind those pictures. I want to see and learn about the real you and the mess you hide behind the camera! I definitely appreciate all these things (the fashion, the homes and the overpriced nail polish as any other girl) and still look up to those who have certainly earned their success. I am done with those who complain for no reason (hello you live in Manhattan, travel the world, have created your own job and seem healthy. I would certainly like to go to yoga and meet with friends for lunch everyday), feel entitled just because of who you are and those who lie about being self-made.
Here at Sit and Stay Awhile, I believe in honesty and being real with my readers. I define flawless as being ok with who I am and where I am at in my life right now. And at this moment, I’m a twenty seven years old, not married and live with a roommate. I finally landed a full time job that I love, creativity in the kitchen is a fail more often than not so a salad or soup is dinner most nights and two weeks ago I went home and kind of broke down to my parents because I am exhausted from being a grad student and working full time. If you have made it this far, I applaud you for reading the novel this post has turned into, thank you for listening and sticking around. What are your feeling with lifestyle bloggers ? Who are you favorites and why? Who do you despise and why?

The Working Girl

Come Monday morning as soon as you set your purse down and turn on the computer you are hit with a wave of emails and projects are piling up behind you. It's barely nine a.m. and you are already stressing before the day starts. Before I let myself think about all I have going on, I slow down, take a deep breath and remind myself of these helpful tips:

Organization
Organization is key for me, without it I cannot get my day started. Keeping my work space clean and orderly is my number one priority. If my space starts to get messy and piles are stacking up, I deal with it right away. When tasks or projects are assigned to me, I am able to focus 100% on what is in front of me instead of thinking about everything that needs to be cleaned up and put away.

Inspiration
This is essential to me!!! I need inspiration on a weekly basis, whether it comes from books, daily observations, magazines, pinterest, instagram, quotes, support and encouragement that comes from family and friends. Everyone needs a little motivation to have a productive day at work. Inspiration and creativity is an important part of my job, I work with kids everyday and finding the right book to spark a child's interest in reading is huge! If a kid walks into the library and tells me they hate reading, I am always able to find a little inspiration to turn those kiddos into readers.

Take Breaks
Stepping away from the desk is one of the hardest things for me. I am always working on a project or really close to being done and will not stop until it is completed. Coworkers have to tell me to take lunch! Learning to take breaks in between projects and going outside, breathing in fresh air and changing scenery is necessary at work. Being cooped up inside and glued to a computer is not healthy! So in an effort to step away from my work space more often, I encourage you to actually leave the office when you have short breaks.

Be the Yes Girl!
Now, I'm not saying it's ok for your boss to abuse you by making you do so much at your job, but if your boss asks you to do something or to take an opportunity, do it! Anytime my boss or coworkers ask me to fill in for another coworker, take on outreach programs, or clean the fridge, I do it. I do not want the people at work to get the impression that they cannot confront me and ask me to do something for them that might be a big favor. Remember saying yes means better relationships and moving up at work. You don't want to say yes to absolutely everything, finding the balance between saying yes and no is an important part of the workday.

Girl Talk

Back in late July, I hinted at a possible new series centered on topics and discussions that would be inviting, comfortable, casual and hopefully interesting enough for any and all women to gather around and share each other's experiences. So that is exactly where we will begin, I know it may be early in the day for most people, but for every "Girl Talk," I hope to hear how your day went (on a personal level and about your job), all the accomplishments and positive outcomes of your workday as well as the challenges you faced.

When I graduated from college back in 2011, I left full of ambition, independence and ready to take on whatever the world had in store for me. I moved to New York and spent my mornings in Bryant Park watching women in suits walking the streets with tunnel vision of success and empowerment. In those moments I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life but I knew I wanted to make a difference and listen to all the greats on how to be career driven and successful. At first I only thought of jobs that offered really high salaries instead of what I was really passionate about until I walked the halls of a library of all places. Now I was extremely fortunate that I had an extensive amount of time to get to know myself out of college and in between jobs. I let my mind wander, I explored and allowed myself to be curious. I learned what I was actually good at and found a passion. With time to myself, encouragement and yes a little treating myself, I learned about the importance of having a relationship with yourself. It may sound strange and even a little selfish. I find it a crucial part of living, something we all need a little more of.

As a part of a generation full of young professional woman, I look around and see friends who are getting married and starting families and I can't help but to feel selfish because my mind is in school, my career, finding balance and the relationship and friendships I have. I've grown up reading history books where women were the underdog and look up to those who fought hard and won their battles. I am not an extreme feminist and I will never try persuade your opinion on anything. I'm here to listen, because your voice is the most powerful gift.  As an advocate for self love, I'm here to encourage you to be the best person you can be through simple and healthy avenues, I am not here to promote arrogance or pride. I'm here to listen to your stories and share them. But I would like to share this link with you :)

It's Not Goodbye

If you're wondering where I've been for the last month and half, I've been dealing with a few personal matters and slowly but...
