Kitchen Clean Up

Since I got a few goodies for my kitchen over Christmas, I decided this past weekend would be dedicated to a serious purging. I took everything out of the cupboards, completely cleared off the counter-tops (I even went through my fridge, scrubbed it down and restocked it) and started approaching all the open space with a minimalist look in mind. After a much need shower after two days of working on the kitchen, I feel so much better with my newly organized kitchen :) Do yourself a favor and spend a weekend cleaning out a room in your house that needs a lot of love!

Write 15 Minutes A Day

I'm pretty sure it is long gone by now but when I was little, my most prized possession was a light pink Minnie Mouse journal. I kept it in my pajama drawer underneath my nightgowns so my sister would never find it. In it was the first story I ever wrote, it was about an otter and sea lion who were best friends, lyrics to a Brandy song (I had this obsession with Brandy at a ridiculously young age) and the list of people or rather things I would thank when I won an academy award, that list included my parents, my cat and my grandmother.

I have been a writing stories and relieving my emotions in journals since I was practically a toddler. I've stored memories I no longer remember, I notice the wave on a page where tears have fallen and laugh at some of the first crushes I talk about in these entries. These journals live in box in the back of my closet if I ever want to revisit them. Whether you are a writer or not, get yourself a journal and spend fifteen minutes a day writing whatever is on your mind. Lists, good or bad days, all the concerts you've seen in your life, whatever you fancy, jot it down! It might make you laugh or tear up, the point is the power of writing helps relax your mind, it invigorate a little creativity and helps expand your imagination.  I recently came across this journal and want to get it for everyone :)

My Favorite Things

A few things to perk up the house like prints of my favorite places around the world, books to pretty up my coffee table, new make-up for glowing skin, large library bags to cart books around town and tan shoes to haul out for the warm weather that is already taking over. These are just a few of my favorite things in the new year :)

The Eye Has to Travel

I love the quote by the Dalai Lama that goes "Once a year, go someplace you've never been before." I think it is really important in life to travel, to see the world and go somewhere that it is completely foreign, whether it be India or Ohio. When I decided to go to Indiana for college, so many people were surprised, really, Indiana? They asked if there was a particular reason and I explained that I wanted to experience something different than California. I was young, I had no attachments to California and was anxious to live somewhere new.  The curiosity for traveling though came at a much younger age. I was fortunate that my parents were always wanting to go somewhere exciting when my siblings and I were young. It's where my philosophy that learning goes way behind the classroom. You must get out in the world and experience another culture, another language, different food and being among the locals. Here's a shortened list of the a much larger one of all the countries I'd like to visit.

My Top Ten:
Turkey
Scotland
Ireland
Germany
India
Spain
Russia
Greece
Czech
Italy

Mediterranean Grilled Chicken and Grape Skewers

Many people's resolutions revolve around losing weight, whether it's changing their diet or choosing to exercise more. Instead of looking at your situation as losing weight and immediately opting for diet plans, don't tell yourself you have to cut all the good stuff. Do as they Greeks do and center your meals around a Mediterranean style with lots of proteins, olives, feta cheese, yogurts, fruits and veggies. Choose to eat complex carbs in fruits like berries and get your fats in cheese.  As always, I need to change my eating habits and luckily  I've found a ton of Greek recipes that sound delicious. This chicken and grape dish looks fantastic.

The January Cure

If you have not joined the January Cure over at Apartment Therapy then you need to do so now. I started the cure at the beginning of last year and I am proud to say I made it to the end. It felt so good and satisfying going through and cleaning out closets, adding flowers to different rooms, working on diy projects throughout the house and updating what needed fixing. I hope you will join me and many others with this year's January goals over at Apartment Therapy
