First Day of School

Since the first day of school was earlier this week here in California, all my kiddos have been excitedly or not so excitedly sharing their first day experiences with me. So of course, I've been talking to friends and co-workers about how nerve-wracking their first day of of elementary school was. I was able to find this buried in the archives of my phone and thought I'd share something of me on my first day back to school. Can you remember the excitement or the horror of going back to school when you were little?

this week's favorites...

Back to School shopping is my favorite time of year! I was never one of those kids who dreaded the going to back to school or stocking up on all the goodies for my new desk. As a 90s kid, Lisa Frank and Spice Girls were extremely popular. Everything from lunchboxes, pencils and folders, I had it all. The chunky shoes were definitely in style and I had one pair, stamp markers maybe one of the best inventions ever and this backpack was everything. What were some of your favorite back to school items growing up?

The Babysitter's Club

If there was one book series I read religiously while growing up it was The Babysitter's Club and Dawn and Stacey were my favorite girls. I'm pretty sure I've read every book and graphic novel ever written, I watched the show and every once and awhile I still enjoy a viewing of the 90s classic. What book series did you love growing up? I was also a Nancy Drew fan and I'm actually about to start the Trixie Belden  series.

90's Fashion: Tie Around the Waist

To tie around the waist or not?! My sister pulls off this look really well, me...not so much! What do you think of this 90s trend that is making a comeback?!

Girl Band

Growing up there was always three of us. We were best friends and luckily two of us lived close enough so we could just walk to each others house if we were stuck and bored at home. Afternoons were for swimming in the pool, playing games, watching movies and listening to music. When the Spice Girls blew up, we were obsessed. We wore skimpy clothes, started wearing makeup, plastered posters all over our rooms and started our own girl group. We wrote enough songs to fill an album, we spent recess writing lyrics, rehearsing our songs and choreography (I'm positive our dance moves were not as seductive as we expected they were) and loved every minute of it.  Wherever the video-tape of us singing and performing our first "music video" is, I hope it is long gone. I'm pretty sure I look ridiculous singing into my hairbrush.

Spice Up Your Life

Can you believe it's already the end of August?! I sure can't but I'm happy to bring back one of my favorite series on the blog, sharing my favorite nostalgic moments with you. The Spice Girls defined my childhood. Their first big hit, Wannabe was the theme song to every elementary school girl's sleepover in America during the 90s. I went through a phase where each girl was my favorite but I dressed like Ginger every chance I got. My mom who was not very approving of my wannabe skin tight British flag dress and singing their songs as loud as I could while playing them on repeat surprised my sister and I with tickets to see them live one summer - it was the best summer of my young life. I also went with my two best friends at the time. Any and everything made with the Spice Girl brand, you better believe I owned it. Who was your favorite? What was your favorite song?!

Friday Morning

This weekend I'm off to enjoy a nice trip to the coast and hang with my family, that is extended family. For as long as I can remember, the second week of August meant preparing for the O'Brien Family Reunion. It's always fun to visit with aunts, uncles and cousins you don't get to see often, reminisce about the good old days and listen to stories about our family's past. Going to see my great aunt and uncle, I'm always fascinated with the stories my aunt remembers and talking about history with them. So I'm off to Newport to enjoy the company of the O'Brien clan and take in the cool weather. It's suppose to reach 117 in the desert this weekend. Good thing I won't be sweltering in the unbearable heat!!! What are your weekend plans? See you Monday :)

Just Wink

Last month when I was browsing the card collection at Target in hopes of finding something for my guy, I stumbled across the Just Wink collection. Now I usually stick to independent paper good stores and tend to be loyal to my favorite card brands but these were way too adorable and hilarious (and have excellent fonts/prints) that I couldn't pass them up. I nearly bought five cards to give him for our three year anniversary but I found one that was perfect. Next time you are at Target make sure to scope out these fun little treats :)

Restless Nights

What does unwinding after work mean for you? Does it mean diving into a hobby, catching up on your book list, relaxing with your family, making a new recipe, listening to music and cleaning the apartment, binging Netflix or just enjoying the quietness of your home? I thrive on lists and you could say my agenda is glued to my hand. I don't leave the house without it! I like having a routine and living by a schedule But lately, I've noticed myself getting bored by doing nearly the same thing every night. So in an effort to get more creative and out of this lull, I have a list of different things to do each night. What's your nightly routine like?

The Librarian Suggests

What I'm Reading: For being the Harry Potter nerd that I am, I have not read the small Hogwarts Library collection that includes: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Tales of Beedle the Bard and Quidditch Throug the Ages. So last week I checked them all out and have finished two of the three. The Tales of Beedle the Bard is without a doubt my favorite. But I'm also really liking and looking forward to the movie adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander next year :) I'm also reading World Without Fish and have been encouraging kids to check out all the copies we have. A fantastically illustrated juvenile non-fiction book that educates and informs kids of what is happening to our oceans and what they can do about it. What I'm listening too: I've been listening to the podcast Rosie and Jessica's Day of Fun for awhile now. Ever since frequent guest and librarian, Margaret H. Willison  mentioned their show on NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, I have been tuning in to the duo that is Rosie and Jessica. A show structured around the girls latest favorites in books, tv shows, movies, lists of every kind and what they're making, cooking and finding on the internet. What I'm watching: I Capture the Castle, which is based on the novel of the same name by Dodie Smith (who you know as being the author of 101 Dalmatians!!). A simple, tragic but lovely story about a struggling family living in a decaying castle in 1930s England. I don't know if Rose Byrne is just a terrible actress or if I just hate every role she plays. What are you reading, listening too and watching?
