Friday Films

Image
Even though I rank The Big Lebowski as a top twenty film, I seriously haven't seen it in like two years.  So after working all day, I'll be staying in and watching The Big Lebowski at some point this weekend. What are you watching?!

Friday Morning...

Image
Hello readers, I hope you've had a good week. I'm certainly glad it's the end of August, let's hope the weather starts to cool down so I can start stocking up on all the dark colors and cute fall clothes I've been seeing in the windows lately. I've had a busy week and I have a bit of a hectic weekend so here's a few links to enjoy for your weekend. See you all on Monday :)

As a ten year I can still remember staying up til midnight with my best friend blasting and dancing to Craig David and Warren G. These were just some of my favorite Hip Hop Artists I would listen to on the regular when I was kid. Since having seen Straight Outta Compton last week, I couldn't help but make a 90s Hip Hop/Rap and R&B playlist, it's well over two hundred songs. Who was your favorite Hip Hop Artist of the 90s?

First Day of School

Image
Since the first day of school was earlier this week here in California, all my kiddos have been excitedly or not so excitedly sharing their first day experiences with me. So of course, I've been talking to friends and co-workers about how nerve-wracking their first day of of elementary school was. I was able to find this buried in the archives of my phone and thought I'd share something of me on my first day back to school. Can you remember the excitement or the horror of going back to school when you were little?

90's Music: Straight Outta Compton

Image
So how many times have you seen Straight Outta Compton already? For a biopic, this movie flies by. Although long, the story of N.W.A. and the following out is executed almost perfectly. It gets a little choppy once the movie starts to focus on Ice Cube and Dr. Dre's departure from the group and the beginning of their solo careers but really there is little room for criticism. Since I grew up listening to many of these artists, I was definitely bobbing my head to the beat and singing along with the songs the entire movie. Straight Outta Compton is epic and the cast is exceptional with a side of clips including Snoop, Warren G, Tupac and Bone Thug N' Harmony in the background. This film is intense, it's loaded with emotion and a few deep messages. I hope you see it and enjoy it :)

Can we all just agree that O'Shea Jackson Jr. is a complete babe and did a stand up performance in his debut film, Straight Outta Compton!!!

Things to Do in Idaho

The Daily Escape: 90's Flasback

Image
One of the best family trips growing up was our summer drive to Idaho. We had family friends who lived in Sun Valley and even though that was nearly twenty years ago, I can remember almost every minute of those trips. We frequented the small downtown book shop, learned how to ice-skate near The Lodge, met Nancy Kerrigan and almost bumped into Arnold Schwarzenegger while getting ice cream once. To our summer near the lake, where we lived in our bathing suits til nightfall, took drives through the wooded neighborhoods, were treated fruity pebbles for breakfast (sugary cereals were only allowed on vacations in our house), stayed up late making tents in the bedroom while reading Stellaluna over and over again, listened to booming thunder storms and torrential rainfall, you are a memory I hope I never forget. What was your favorite family trip growing up?

Friday Showing

Image
As a toddler, I use to wake up ridiculously early. I can easily remember waking up before the sun even started rising. I use to love the morning because that meant the house was still and quiet and I had the living room all to myself. I could play with my dollhouse without my sister bugging me or watch a little bit of tv without my siblings and I fighting over the remote. As I approach thirty, I find it a little funny that I still have a very vivid memory of getting up hours before school and turning on the tube just so I could watch Flipper and then Mr. Wizard's World on Nickelodeon. I was such a nerd for science experiments.

Friday Morning

Image
Hey readers, how are you doing? What have you been up too? This month has gone by so fast, I cannot believe September is only a week away! I have been a busy bee all week, so I am especially looking forward to a home cooked meal, sleeping in, hauling out my fall decorations and getting ready for the annual Gilmore Girl marathon. Lucky for me it has been somewhat of a quiet work week so I have been to tackle the laundry list of projects that I need to get before our library closes for the big renovation. I'm about half way through my list, so I can start my weekend feeling accomplished and not too guilty about being a little bit of a bum.  What are your plans?

this week's favorites...

Image
Back to School shopping is my favorite time of year! I was never one of those kids who dreaded the going to back to school or stocking up on all the goodies for my new desk. As a 90s kid, Lisa Frank and Spice Girls were extremely popular. Everything from lunchboxes, pencils and folders, I had it all. The chunky shoes were definitely in style and I had one pair, stamp markers maybe one of the best inventions ever and this backpack was everything. What were some of your favorite back to school items growing up?

The Babysitter's Club

Image
If there was one book series I read religiously while growing up it was The Babysitter's Club and Dawn and Stacey were my favorite girls. I'm pretty sure I've read every book and graphic novel ever written, I watched the show and every once and awhile I still enjoy a viewing of the 90s classic. What book series did you love growing up? I was also a Nancy Drew fan and I'm actually about to start the Trixie Belden  series.

Girl Band

Image
Growing up there was always three of us. We were best friends and luckily two of us lived close enough so we could just walk to each others house if we were stuck and bored at home. Afternoons were for swimming in the pool, playing games, watching movies and listening to music. When the Spice Girls blew up, we were obsessed. We wore skimpy clothes, started wearing makeup, plastered posters all over our rooms and started our own girl group. We wrote enough songs to fill an album, we spent recess writing lyrics, rehearsing our songs and choreography (I'm positive our dance moves were not as seductive as we expected they were) and loved every minute of it.  Wherever the video-tape of us singing and performing our first "music video" is, I hope it is long gone. I'm pretty sure I look ridiculous singing into my hairbrush.

Spice Up Your Life

Image
Can you believe it's already the end of August?! I sure can't but I'm happy to bring back one of my favorite series on the blog, sharing my favorite nostalgic moments with you. The Spice Girls defined my childhood. Their first big hit, Wannabe was the theme song to every elementary school girl's sleepover in America during the 90s. I went through a phase where each girl was my favorite but I dressed like Ginger every chance I got. My mom who was not very approving of my wannabe skin tight British flag dress and singing their songs as loud as I could while playing them on repeat surprised my sister and I with tickets to see them live one summer - it was the best summer of my young life. I also went with my two best friends at the time. Any and everything made with the Spice Girl brand, you better believe I owned it. Who was your favorite? What was your favorite song?!
