Do It Yourself Facial

Image
If there's one thing I inherited from my maternal grandmother, it was the art of pampering. My grandmother was the queen of makeup, creams, nail lacquer and having the latest and greatest beauty items. Growing up playing in her bathroom drawers while she was cooking dinner, I've grown up to become exactly like her. And if I could afford to hit the spas on a weekly basis, oh believe me when I say I would be having massages and facials all day long. But until then, I am all about do it yourself routines. This Berry Yogurt Mask is one I have yet to try but sounds fantastic :)  Step 1In a blender, combine 2 tablespoons plain yogurt and 2 tablespoons honey, and pulse until fully combined. Step 2Add 1/4 cup mixed berries, pureeing until smooth, then add 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Step 3Using your hands, apply mixture to a clean, dry face. Let mask sit 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse face thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Age Avengers Blackberries deliver even more antioxidants than bl…

Finding Zen

Image
So far this year has been full of trying moments, good news, sad news, bouts of stress and emotional highs and lows, so it is about time to call for a time out. When I am able to find a few minutes to give to myself, I like to decompress with a relaxing bubble bath complete with flower petals, a soothing face and body scrub and taking more than a few deep breaths. When you need time for yourself, how do you de-stress and come back to your place of zen?

Saturday Happy

Image
Going to the water park was a big treat for us growing up. Living in a small and rural community that meant driving an hour and half to Palm Springs and hitting up Knott's Soak City during the summer. I could handle most of the rides like relaxing and tanning on inner tubes down the lazy river and running back to the top to go down the winding and twisting slides over and over. There was one particular slide I just couldn't push myself to try. Once I got a little older and finally had the courage to go down that tall and intimidating slide, I wanted to go again and again.  This artist, photographer Krista Long wanted to capture a particular moment for her I Love Summer photo series. You know that moment when flying out of the slide and catapulting into the air before hitting the water? She wanted to catch that frame!  Do you remember if you would purposely make a funny pose or did you just go with the flow?! I'm so curious to know! Here are a few of the images she pinned …

Friday Showings

Image
I got hooked into the show My Boys right when it premiered back in 2006 on TBS while I was living in Indiana. After spending a little bit of time in Chicago, I loved how the show revolved around my favorite city, baseball and a stellar cast. Disappointed it only lasted four seasons, there is still a place in my heart for My Boys. What are you watching this weekend?

Friday Mornings

Image
Happy Friday everyone, I hope you had a fantastic week! I am starting my weekend off quite well, I wrapped up my science experiments at the library with a bang and have started prepping for my last book discussion for the summer reading program. Other than a great yin yoga session last night, my weekend is wide open, what are your plans? This large and quite comfy comforter looks a little too inviting for a lazy morning, don't you think? See you Monday morning :)

this week's favorites

A good morning should start with a little Vinyasa and a little deep stretching to warm the body up. A few of these are my favorite poses and others are goals to work towards. How do you start your day off?

On the Town

Image
We certainly are no L.A. when it comes to night clubs or swanky bars, but there are few places I've tried and others that remain on my to do list to check out. Moving back after college, my home town looked completely different since I had grown up a bit. I started to realize how much activity really goes on in this mostly well known resort town. With Palm Springs giving in a bit to the younger and hip lifestyle, the desert is starting to attract a new crowd. The night life isn't crazy, but to be honest it is kind of nice being able to stroll into a bar without having to wait around the corner to get in. I would mostly stay in Downtown Palm Springs and enjoy walking the main street, Palm Canyon.  Karaoke, Jazz, Country or Dance party, whatever you're in the mood for, we've got it :)

Summer Nights

Image
Every Thursday evening on the main drag, Palm Canyon Drive is filled with art sellers, food stands, musicians, jewelry tents and many more. It's kind of a big deal and it seems to be packed all the time. I recently went with a few friends and I couldn't believe how crowded the street fair was, it's mid July, people!! Let me just remind you, it's been brutal here for the last few weeks, it reached 113 this week! Nonetheless, people were out in the masses, buying popsicles, checking out art, stopping into the shops that stay open a little later and listening to Karaoke down the street at The Coconut Bar. Whenever you're out here, don't forget to check out the Thursday Night Street Fair :)

Jewelry Queens and Gold Habits

Image
I've been a jewelry queen since about the age of three. Playing dress up was a part of my every day growing up, whether that meant getting in my mom's closest or my grandmother pulling some of her old dresses, hats, gloves and jewelry into a suitcase for me to call all my own. Putting on fanciful jewelry made me feel like the Queen of England, of course I'd stack ring after ring on each finger. To this day, jewelry is very much a part of my every day style, whether with a statement piece or just slipping on my college ring before I run out the door for work. Going back and forth from silver and gold, chunky to dainty pieces, jewelry plays an important part in who I am. For every piece I own or have inherited, each piece holds value and history with it.

You + Me

Image
What is your favorite classic read?  To a voracious reader, asking someone what their favorite book is, is not only upsetting but nearly impossible to answer. You'll get a response of at least ten books and even at that point, you will go back and forth ranking those top ten. That is why I got a bit more specific and want to know the classics you've perhaps read more than once? While they are many great works, there has to be one that really just stands out to you. For me, it is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I loved imagining the detail in the grand estate that was Gatsby's home. And I dreamed about the beautiful and gold fringed dresses (you see the '20s are my favorite decade, all the more reason to love Fitzgerald's work), long gloves, affairs and handsome and perfectly suited men with jazz music playing in the background. It was not only the first book I read and hated the ending, it was the first novel I fell in love with really analyzing character …

Take A Hike

Image
One of the best outdoor activities to try out when in the Coachella Valley are the hiking trails! There are literally hundreds of trails that take over the valley, as well as the high desert and the mountain towns up Highway 74. With miles of desert landscape, wild flowers and spotting all sorts of adorable little desert creatures, I'm warning you, you'll become an outdoor addict and explorer in my hometown. Although still popular to hike in our heated summers, hiking at sunrise in the middle of winter in Palm Springs is one natural wonder. A few my favorites include the cross hike and the bump and grind trails. Although I'd like to try out others like Palm Canyon, a few in Joshua Tree, and the most talked about and gorgeous Tahquitz trail. Get your weekender, appropriate shoes and phone, because you'll be taking lots of pictures!

The Palm Springs Playground

Image
Spending my high school years out in the desert, there was a lot of complaining going on, there was just nothing going on. Fast forward to now, I never realized that Palm Springs was actually a hip town. Not really known for being a travel spot for the young, this Old Hollywood getaway has quickly become one hot destination for people of all ages. When I started seeing my home town pop up on lists of top travel destinations and places bloggers dreamed of retreating too, I had to go out and explore what was so cool about a place that was only a famous playground in the 60s. Known for being the place to visit during the winter, it's best to play outside. Whether enjoying a little tennis, a golf game, hitting the pool or relaxing at the many boutique hotels in Downtown Palm Springs, I hope you find yourself out here soon :)

Saturday Happy

Image
Last week I was invited to an outdoor evening yoga session. In the mood to try something new and meet a new crowd of yogis, I was excited but not all that thrilled about trying yoga in 100+ weather. I sucked it up and went anyway and this is what I got out if it. I ended up staying at the instructors home for about three hours and felt more than rejuvenated, I left with more energy and was going home and ending the day in high spirits. Try something new and step outside your comfort zone, even if its just a baby step. Yoga under the stars, yes please! What's making you happy this week?

Friday Showing

Image
I came across the trailer of Last Weekend, a few weeks ago. Staring Patricia Clarkson, Joseph Cross, Jayma Mays and a full cast of great actors,  it's my kind of movie and a perfect summer flick centered on a dysfunctional family at their lake house. Mark your calendars for August 29 because it will only be out for a limited release :) What are you watching this weekend?

Friday Morning

Image
Happy Friday readers, how has your week been going? Mine's been a good one, busy but long at the same time. I've been both over the moon excited and (secretly) counting down the days since last week for today! I'm spending an extended weekend away from the desert to head to the coast to celebrate two years of being with my guy :) We're on our way to Santa Barbara for a nice relaxing trip, we'll be hitting the beach and meeting up with good friends. So your enjoy the next few days, tell your partner how much you love and appreciate them and we'll catch up next week :)

Come Friday morning, I can't wait to get out of bed and start getting ready because that means once I shower and fix up for the day I can be tuning in to all my favorite podcasts. I usually wait until Friday to listen to everything because that is when Pop Culture Happy Hour goes live. In the early hours of the morning or taking a nice relaxing bath before I head out for the evening is the perfect time to have a few minutes to myself and my podcast stations :) How do you spend your Friday in between work?
